How-To: Enter expressions with exponents (powers) - OpenOffice.org Math
- This screencast demonstrates how to enter expressions with exponents. In this example we are going to enter the expression "x to the power of y."
- To do this, first click on the "math commands window" here.
- Now, first we need to type in the "base." For this example we are going to use the variable "x" as the base. Just type it in.
- Next, type in a "caret" ( ^ ). You can do this by pressing and holding the shift key and pressing the no. six (6) key once. Release the shift key after.
- Now, enter the exponent that you want to use by typing it enclosed in "braces" or "curly brackets" like this.
- As you can see, in this example we have entered the variable "y."
- Good! As you can see the expression "x to the power of y" has now been displayed.
- Take note that besides single variables or numbers, you can also enter whole expressions as exponents.
- Do this by typing the expression you want within the "braces" like so.
- For this example we shall use "y+1" as the exponent.
- Congratulations! You have learned how to enter expressions with exponents. Congratulations!
