Symbol
A symbol is a sign, shape or object that represents a concept or has a
commonly accepted meaning. It can be as simple as a character
that represents a certain sound of a language, or it can represent a whole
idea or concept such as the shape of a dove which conveys peace.
Symbols are basic tools for a society to facilitate communication. A society with commonly accepted symbols can communicate meanings, messages, warnings or commands just by flashing or showing a symbol.
In Openoffice.org Math, you can insert some commonly accepted mathematical symbols
using the symbol catalog.
