LaTeX

"LaTex" is a document markup language as well as a document preparation system that provides a versatile way typesetting used by the "TeX" typesetting system. It is basically a code like that determines what a document should look like. The difference is, in LaTeX the typesetting system itself can decide how it can be presented after just a few inputs by the user.

"LaTeX" is primarilly used by professionals like scientists, mathematicians and scholars as its very programmable features help a lot in automating a lot of dreary formatting tasks like layouting, referencing, creating tables etc.

LaTeX can also be used in conjunction with when dealing with references and bibliographies.

OpenOffice.org Writer can export text documents into LaTeX files. These have the file name extension ".tex"
