HTML (Hypertext Markup Language)

HTML stands for Hyptext Markup Language. It is the predominant markup language used in creating web pages. HTML files basically contain html codes that tell an internet browser, such as Internet Explorer, what to and how to display a web page. This includes the layout, the character and paragraph formatting, images, input fields and other scripts, codes and interactive content.

In OpenOffice.org a text document can be saved as a Writer HTML document. This saves the text document in HTML "code" which preserves the formatting and layout of the document (when it is compatible). The resulting output "html" file can now then be read by HTML processors or web browsers.

HTML files are stored with the file extension ".htm" or ".html".
