Guides
The Guides or Guide lines in OpenOffice.org appear as broken lines crossing the workspace
of a document.
They can be vertical or horizontal lines
and often base their position from the rulers in the work space. Both Impress
and Draw
have this option available when working with presentations
and drawings.
A guide line is used to align
objects within a document. For example, you can align a series of
text blocks with a chart in Impress, or you can use the guide as the basis for symmetry
when making a drawing in Draw. You must enable the “snap to guides” option to automatically align objects
to the guide lines. (See related screencasts
below for information to enable this)
Unlike the grid,
guide lines are more visible in a document.
Also you can set the guides to a certain ruler measurement in inches. So you can make drawings and slides
more accurately,
especially when they are set to be printed. Note, that the guides don't appear once you print
the documents.
Guides or guide lines can also be called "Snap Lines."
