A guide line is used to objects within a document. For example, you can align a series of text blocks with a chart in Impress, or you can use the guide as the basis for symmetry when making a drawing in Draw. You must enable the “snap to guides” option to automatically align objects to the guide lines. (See related below for information to enable this)

Unlike the guide lines are more visible in a document. Also you can set the guides to a certain ruler measurement in inches. So you can make drawings and more accurately, especially when they are set to be printed. Note, that the guides don't appear once you print the documents.
