Cell Dependency
A spreadsheet cell
can depend on
the values in other cells, this is called the cell's dependency.
When a cell is dependent, it needs another cell's data to fully calculate its own value.
This is usually the case when the cell has
a formula
, and this
formula has references
to other cells.
In contrast a cell that only contains a value is independent.
For example when calculating the average of a group of numbers, the formula needs the sum of all values of cells in the group and also the number of cells in the group.
If references in the formula are invalid, the dependent cell will display an error value of "#REF!".
Using Cell Dependencies
The following screencasts demonstrate how to use cell dependencies:
- How to have the value of a cell depends on another cell's value.
- How to insert a formula into a spreadsheet cell.
- How to read error values.
- How to debug a formula.
