Braces
Braces are basically brackets
with a particular curly shape { } . They are sometimes called "curly brackets."
They have almost the same function as other brackets, though there is a distinction
between them, especially in some areas like mathematics and computer science.
Primarily however, braces like other brackets, are punctuation marks that group or set a part the particular text or characters that are found within it. Typically, braces are used in pairs, with a "left brace" at the start and a "right brace" at the end. Anything between those braces are the ones included or grouped within the brace.
In OpenOffice.org Math,
braces are used to group terms and expressions so
that formulas can be displayed correctly but it doesn't readily appear on
the formula itself. The appropriate markup code
must be typed in for it to be displayed in the formula.
There are also horizontal version of the brace called the "underbrace" and the "overbrace." Both can be inserted as a symbol in OpenOffice.org Math.
Inserting Braces
The following screencasts demonstrate how to insert brackets in OpenOffice.org:
- Enter an expression within braces
- Enter an expression with a brace on top (overbrace)
- Enter an expression with a brace below it (underbrace)
