Bitmap (.bmp)
The BMP file format, sometimes called bitmap or DIB file format
(Device Independent Bitmap), is an image file format used to store bitmap
digital images, especially on Microsoft Windows
and OS/2 operating systems.
Many applications
use bitmaps in their built-in graphics subsystems. For example, Microsoft Windows
and OS/2 platforms' GDI subsystem use bitmaps. Specifically, the format used
is the Windows and OS/2 bitmap file format. Usually these files have
the file extension .BMP or .DIB.
The simplicity of the BMP file format, and its widespread familiarity in Windows and elsewhere, as well as the fact that this format is relatively well documented and free of patents, makes it a very common format. Most image processing programs from many operating systems can read and write bitmap formats without any problems.
Most bitmap images however are large since bitmaps do not compress the image data.
OpenOffice.org can support images, and can insert them in text documents in
Writer
or it can even create and edit them
by saving a drawing in bitmap format in Draw.
